GroupJive Search Plugin

The GroupJive Search Plugin adds native search functionality into Joomla 1.5 for GroupJive. It has been tested with v30a and the latest betas from JoomlaPolis. Assuming there are no database changes, it should also work for future versions as well.

It has been based on the original version for Joomla 1.0 and has been upgraded to use the Joomla 1.5 search API. It has the ability to set the menu Itemid for the search results (usually the main GroupJive menu item) as well as change the name for Groups and limit the number of search results returned.

Installation Instructions
  1. Install the plugin through the normal Joomla Install/Uninstall page
  2. Edit the “Search - GroupJive” plugin on the Joomla Plugin Manager page
  3. Enter the menu Itemid for GroupJive and enable the plugin

CB MySQL Field Plugin

The MySQL field type plugin adds a "MySQL Field" to the available list of CB fields. It does not actually add a new field to the database and cannot be edited by the user. It simply queries the database and displays the result of a MySQL statement. Another Community Builder field can be defined for saving the result of the query if required.

You can choose whether the query will return a single result or multiple and define up to 5 parts of the MySQL query including the SELECT, the FROM, the WHERE, the ORDER BY and the LIMIT clause. You can use {USERID} and {VIEWERID} in the MySQL statement which get substituted for the user’s ID and viewer’s ID of the currently viewed profile. You can restrict the query to only execute for the user and/or viewer as well as add a prefix, delimiter and suffix to the output. You can also choose to use CB field substitutions of the user or viewer with the field name in square brackets like [id] and [cb_fieldname].

Installation Instructions
  1. Install the plugin through the CB Plugin Management page
  2. Publish the plugin on the CB Plugin Management page
  3. Add a new “MySQL Field” type from the CB Field Management page
  4. Define a MySQL query and set the other parameters as desired

Daylife News Module

The Daylife News Module for Joomla 1.5 allows you to connect to Daylife news feeds using the Daylife API (DayPI). Once connected, your site can show content pulled in with Daylife. You can select the news topics with these module parameters:

Module Parameters

Access Key:- Identifies the user. It is sent in the query string parameter 'accesskey'. Obtained by registering on Daylife at this address http://developer.daylife.com/user/register and it will then appear in top left hand corner when you are logged in.

Shared Secret:- A shared key between Daylife and the API user. This key should never be sent in an API call. Once registered and logged in this also shows in top left hand corner of the Daylife site just under the Access Key.

Start Time:- This is the time furthest in the past from which you want articles to be found. So if you wanted all articles from Christmas Day 2008 you would put 2008-12-25. If this is left blank and the days from now is filled in then it will work this out from the end time.

End Time:- This is the most recent time to search up until. So if we wanted to search all articles from Christmas Day 2008 until New Year's Day you would enter an end time of 2009-01-01.

Days from now:- If this is filled in then it will search for any article from the end time to an earlier date specified by the days from now. So if we wanted the week before Christmas Day 2008 we could set the end time as 2008-12-25 and the days from now as 7. This will search from 2008-12-18 until 2008-12-25. If no date is given in the End Date then the date will roll so if 5 is placed in the days from now it will always be 5 days before and up to the moment the page loaded.

Enter some text:- The module using the DayPI (Day Life API) allows full-text searching of news content. It can accept queries with that are composed of up to 32 terms. Each term is considered to be a word. The logical operators are not counted in these 32 terms. A single word can be used but if a phrase is used it must be enclosed in double quotes. These are case insensitive. These words or quotes can be joined together with Boolean operators to form a more complex query. Searching just the title of an article is done like this:- title:joomla. Searching title and articles like this:- "open source" AND title:joomla which brings back articles containing "open source" and with joomla in the title. For full documentation and the full list of operators that can be used please see http://developer.daylife.com/docs/SearchSyntax

Use the meta keywords for search:- If set to Use first keyword for title only search, then this will allow the module to use the first meta keyword or phrase of the article as the word to use to search the daylife titles. If Use first keyword for title and body search then it will use the first keyword in the title and body search. If Use first keyword for title and all keywords for body search then the first word or phrase will be used for title but all of the keywords or phrases for the body search. If Use first keyword for body search then the first word or phrase will be used for the body search. If Use all keywords for body search then all the keywords or phrases will be used for the body search.

Results to be returned:- The number of results you would like to show in the module. If it cannot find enough in the date range specified, it will just bring back those it can find.

Offsets the results:- Usually the most relevant results will be returned, but if you place 25 here and 10 in the number returned, it will bring back 10 results starting from the 25th most relevant to the 35th most relevant.

Sort:- Allow for sorting by chronologically ascending 'date', by weighted 'relevance' or by the default daterank (a mixture of the two), an option to sort by combination of date and relevance.

Advanced Parameters

Protocol:- phprest. Returns data in a form directly deserializable to native PHP objects.

Server Address:- The server address to connect to, usually "freeapi.daylife.com".

Access Level:- The type of access, usually "publicapi".

Daylife Version:- DayPI uses a Major.Minor.Patch version scheme. See this online guide for more details http://developer.daylife.com/docs/ReleaseNotes

Source filter id:- A way of filtering the returns. See this online guide for more details http://cookbook.daylife.com/how-to-use-source-filters

Include Scores:- Helpful for debugging.

Other Parameters

Module Class Suffix:- Adds a suffix to the class to help style your module.

Enable Cache:- Will enable the Joomla! cache, useful for limiting the requests to Daylife.

Style Type:- How the results will be returned, as a list, in paragraphs or in divisions.

URL Styling:- The styling of the URLs returned. Can be None, Bold, Italic, or Bold and Italic.

Time Stamp Styling:- The styling of the time stamps returned. Can be None, Bold, Italic, or Bold and Italic.

Excerpt Styling:- The styling of the excerpts returned. Can be None, Bold, Italic, or Bold and Italic.

Source Styling:- The styling of the sources returned. Can be None, Bold, Italic, or Bold and Italic.

Include Date:- Whether to show the date and if so whether it should appear on a new line.

Include Excerpt:- Whether to show the excerpt and if so whether it should appear on a new line.

Include Source:- Whether to show the source and if so whether it should appear on a new line.

Title Length:- Sometimes the titles can be too long for the module so this allows you to set a maximum number of characters. It will make sure it is to the nearest word under the length set and if it is not possible to complete a word then it will truncate the word.

Title Truncater:- Characters to show if the title is truncated.

Date Spacer:- Specify the spacer you would want to break up the title and date if both are on the same line.

Source Spacer:- Specify the spacer you would want to break up the date and source (or title and source if date is not set to show).

Add Bottom Padding:- Ability to add bottom padding to your articles returned to help space them from one another.

Include Target:- Whether the link opens in the browser window replacing your page or in a frame set or in a new window or tab. Blank opens the new document in a new window. Parent is used in the situation where a frameset file is nested inside another frameset file. A link in one of the inner frameset documents which uses parent will load the new document where the inner frameset file had been. Self puts the new document in the same window and frame as the current document. Self works the same as if you had not used TARGET at all. Top loads the linked document in the topmost frame... that is, the new page fills the entire window.

Footer:- You can specify a footer to show at the bottom of your module.

Show Footer:- Switch the footer on or off.

Show Daylife Badge:- You can choose to show the Daylife badge or not and if so which one out of a choice of white background or black background.

Trading Online

Internet transactions are often described as ‘e-commerce’, sometimes abbreviated to ‘e-com’. It’s a buzzword, but all it means is ‘selling online’.

Online sales had a shaky start, but now they are becoming a valuable tool. Compared to a high street shop or printed marketing material, e-commerce allows businesses to instantly reach out to a much larger selection of customers. The dynamic, changing nature of the internet allows services and products to be offered in new and different ways, and updated as often as necessary.

Of course, the basic rules still apply. You need to have good products and services in order to attract customers, and you will also need to advertise your website in traditional ways to get the full benefit from it. Search Engine Optimisation will help get your site known on the web, but it may also need to be known on the high street. Some possible avenues of promotion include –

  • promotional video on YouTube and other video hosting sites;
  • email newsletter to all your present clients to keep them up to date with changes;
  • RSS feeds and news blogging sites to get new developments across.

SoftForge will be happy to advise you and give you examples to help generate more clients. We will also guide you through the process of setting up an e-commerce site.

Protx Signup

At SoftForge  we specialise in e-commerce sites, and we recommend Protx as our payment gateway. Click here to get an account.

After you have a shopping cart set up and products included you will also need –

  • an e-commerce ID
  • a SSL certificate
  • a static IP

An e-commerce ID is the web equivalent of a merchant ID which allows a shop to take payments via terminals in stores.

If you don’t have a merchant account, then we can point you in the direction of a good e-commerce bank and help you through the process of getting the forms filled in. The exact procedure depends on the bank involved, and can take up to two weeks.

An SSL certificate shows you are secure. It is used in the encryption process to provide a secure connection with the payment gateway (Protx). SoftForge can obtain the certificate and do all the work needed to configure it for you.

A static IP provides your computer system with a permanent online address. We can go through the simple set-up process for you.

Getting Online

When the oldest member of SoftForge bought his first domain, few people had heard of the web, costs were high and there was little advice available. Now there are many competing companies, systems and languages to choose from.

SoftForge can show you how to go from an idea to a fully functioning website, avoiding the pitfalls on the way. We can guide you through the entire journey, or you can use other services and agencies along the route. It’s up to you whether you stick with us for the duration, or just come back for advice and help when needed.

The sub-menu at the top of the screen walks you through all stages of the process. Some may be unnecessary for your particular business, and some you may have already covered, but if you read through the whole article you will have a good idea of all that is involved in getting a business website off the ground.

A domain name is the ‘address’ that customers type into the browser to go directly to your site. It needs to be distinct and memorable, and as short as possible. If you already have a company name, that may be available; otherwise, choose something that is different, catchy and abstract.

One word of caution, though: if you choose a name that is similar or the same as that of another company, whether they have an online presence or not, you could have problems later on.

Buying a domain name is simple and you may wonder why some companies charge just pence while others a few pounds. This is because they make more money from charging people to renew domain names than from the initial sales. After a couple of years’ trading, you may find yourself hit with a steep charge when you come to renew.

Once you have bought a domain name, you have registered yourself or your company as the only ones entitled to use it, but nothing else. For it to become an area on the web that people can view, and for you to be able to send and receive emails, the domain will need to be hosted.

However, hosting does not have to be done by the same company who sold you the domain name. So be careful of seller who try to tie you to their expensive hosting services when you buy a domain name from them.

The variety of hosting packages on offer – at a variety of prices – provide differing levels of service. Some companies provide a very basic service, then when you need extra facilities they will charge you extra. Quite often these companies will have an attractively low-looking initial charge for bandwidth or disc space. But the question you really need to ask is ‘Exactly what do I need – and how much of it?’

Rather than dealing in hidden extras, SoftForge is honest and upfront about what you will get for your money and what you won’t. All our packages are fairly priced to reflect the service that is required for a particular kind of site. You will not be paying for a product or service that you don’t really need. You can also switch packages to reflect changes in your business.

Feel free to chat to any of us about what you need now and what you think you might need in the future, and we will be happy to make the transition as smooth as possible. If you ask for a service or product that from experience we think is unsuited to your needs we will point it out and suggest a better alternative.

We want happy customers who recommend us to their friends and business partners, not customers who feel tied to us through fear of the hassle that change would bring.

Once you have a domain name and a host, the time has come to get a server to store the contents of your website (which may be as simple as a few interconnected files, or contain complex databases).

One option is to buy, configure and manage your own server, but this obviously requires a degree of in-house expertise. For small businesses it is generally better to hire space on someone else’s server.

The cheapest solution is to be on a shared server, renting a piece of space alongside other sites. However, the downside to this is that, like a passenger on a bus, you have little control of where the server is going. If the web hosting company you use wants some special software or a security enhancement added, then you can’t do this unless all the other passengers on the server want the same.

The next best option is a virtual private server. With this arrangement, there are blocks between all the different clients on the server so they cannot see each other or interfere with each others’ files, so it feels like having a dedicated server… mostly. But there are still some changes that can only be made if every site owner on the server agrees.

The best choice is a dedicated server. ‘Dedicated’ means exactly what it says: the server is yours alone and every setting is tailored to your business.

At SoftForge we use dedicated servers to host our clients, and they never have to share with other companies.

We run Linux servers with PHP MySQL (don’t worry if that means nothing to you, they’re just the languages the servers use) and keep them up to date with patches and security fixes.

So now you have your domain name, and we have it hosted. Next is the fun bit, as SoftForge take your ideas and turn them into a website.

Only you understand your vision completely, so PowerPoint presentations, drawings and designs on the backs of envelopes are all welcome and helpful means of getting your idea across to us.

We will need to scope the idea, i.e. to decide whether it will be, at one end of the scale, a small static site with content that seldom changes, or at the other end of the scale a larger complex of multiple pages that will need regular updating

Some examples of a static site –

  • an online curriculum vitae
  • a site marking a particular event
  • a pamphlet site promoting an idea or ideology
  • a basic business site showing your place of work, how to get there and a little about what you do

Alternatively, you might want modest regular updates, e.g. a change to the services you offer or a change to your personal information, but would like SoftForge to do them

Some examples of a static site that would require occasional updating –

  • a school, nursery or college.
  • a club, association or social organisation.
  • a high street shop offering services but not online sales.
  • a site for an accountant, musician or other independent professional

The third option is to be in total control, making changes and additions whenever you feel like it. This way you can tweak the content as much as you like, and grow your site organically as your business changes.

Any site could be managed this way, but here are some examples of the kind of site that benefits most from frequent updating by the client -

  • Businesses offering online sales
  • Recruitment consultants who frequently list new vacancies
  • Churches or other organisations holding regular events

For these a full content management system (CMS) would enable one person to be in charge of the quality of the content, but allow others to add and amend material, thus spreading the workload.

Once the basic framework of your website has been established, you will need to provide content.

It takes quite a lot of material to make even a small website – we have found that clients are often surprised by how much. It’s up to you whether you generate your own articles and source your own pictures or use our bespoke copywriting/editing and graphics expertise (see the Additional Services menu), but do we strongly recommend that you don’t let your lovely new site sit idle and empty for months due to lack of material.

That said, if there is a delay with content, it is usually better to get the site up and running so that search engines can find it. Although we want your site to be mistake-free, it will inevitably change over time, and it is often better to publish what you have rather than delay.

When adding content to your site, we work in a development area, so you don’t have to wait for us to show you what we’ve done. Instead, you can log in to see the changes as they happen and approve them or give feedback before they are released to the public. Quite often, it becomes apparent that some tweaks are needed once the content is added – for example, you may find that a different structure to the menu system would better reflect your customers’ needs.

SoftForge want you to be happy with the end product so regular feedback is encouraged, and as long as revisions are kept to a reasonable number we are happy to apply them. If you would like more extensive changes, this will have implications for the original build cost, but we will explain this in full before proceeding.
